Symposium on Suicidal behaviour: From epidemiologic data to public health interventions

Wiener WerkstaetteCongresses and Conferences4. February 20090

Im Rahmen des XII. International Congress of the International Federation of Psychiatric Epidemiology (IFPE) zwischen 16.-19.

Approximately 1 million people wordwide die by suicide each year. Belonging to the 10 most common causes of death, suicide is a major public health problem, and a major cause of premature death. Given that mental-ill health constitutes an important risk factor of suicide, information on suicide and how to prevent it is an important topic for medical professionals. There is increasing evidence that individual-based, but also public-health based interventions contribute to suicide prevention. By covering some of the currently most discussed areas of research in suicidology, like genetics of suicide, international epidemiologic data on child suicides, and public health interventions focusing on restrictive firearm legislation, responsible media reporting, prevention of suicide in primary health care settings, and the possible effects of increasing antidepressant prescriptions and density of psychotherapists, this symposium contributes to spreading some of the latest scientific information that is available on the topic.

Friday 17th April 2009, 16:00-17:30 at the Medical University of Vienna
